２２日に英語の授業がありませんでしたので、土曜日から冬休みはスタートしました♪うふふ
土曜日から東京へ行ってきました!!
なぜなら、この冬休みは日本で最後の冬休みを過ごします｡そして、高校時代の友達は日本に遊びに来ました!!(／▽＼)♪三日間はめっちゃ楽しかったです！

東京ミッドタウンのイルミネーションやスカイツリーや浅草寺やいろんな観光できました!!友達はイスラム教ですから、いっぱい美味しいハラルの日本料理がいただきました。
今夜は一人で福岡と行橋へ帰ってきました。明日は弓道の初段の審査ですから!!!!週末によく遊びましたので、多分頭はしっかり考えれて、キレイに「はっせつ」できると思います…から(笑)

偽りパパ。無視するママ。最低怖い校長先生。マチルダ、かわいそうですね！とにかく、担任先生はとてもやさしいですね。そして、本と一緒に過ごせますね。でも。。。悪いことは増えそうです！マチルダの強い知能と可笑しい能力で、危機を乗り切りますか？

Books! Books!

Read This!

At the end of every school years, I have my sixth graders write me a letter full of questions before they graduate. The questions I hope to get are, “In America do you . . .” and “In Japan is it . . .” asking about . . . well, deep things. Mainly the questions I get are “Do you like Japan?” or “Who's your favorite singer?” or “What's your favorite color?” Come on guys . . .

Last year, however a LOT of sixth graders asked what books I liked or if I had book recommendations. In response, I wrote a LONG LONG list of books I recommend. And I thought I'd start talking about them here. On the first post we'll talk about some fun books.

Number 1. Harry Potter. I love Harry Potter. Everyone should read it. It is amazing. The end.

Number 2. Percy Jackson. If you liked Harry Potter, Percy Jackson is fun. It also talks a lot about Greek and Roman myths that are very prevalent in American and Western culture. Also a pen that turns into a sword is just super cool.

Number 3. Ella Enchanted. Do NOT see the movie, the movie was awful. But the book was amazing. Ella does not wallow around her house with her evil stepmother for very long and ends up on an adventure to try and break the curse her fairy godmother gave her, all before going to the ball in a pumpkin carriage.

Number 4. Howl's Moving Castle. The Ghibli movie was really, really good. But the book, isn't that it's better, it's different. Howl is way more of a coward and Sophie is way more, well, Sophie. I have read this book at least ten times (since finding it in 2008) and love it more every time.

ENGLISH ONLY.

Dealing with Dragons. Being a princess is certainly not all it's cracked up to be. You can't learn magic, or sword fighting, or Latin, or anything fun or practical. So what do you do? Well, if your Cimorene you run off and live with dragons. Which is definitely more interesting.

これは読もう！

毎年、もうすぐ卒業する六年生が質問の手紙を書いてくれます。書いて欲しい質問は「アメリカでは。。。」や「日本に来たので。。。」など、深いらしい質問ですけど。。。普通のは「日本が好きですか？」や「好きな歌集はだれですか？」や「好きな色はなんですか？」です。（－＿－；；；）みんあ。。。。。

でも、昨年度は「オススメ本はありますか？」や「何の本が好きですか？」の質問は結構多かったです！とても嬉しかったですよ！返事で長いオススメ本のリストを書きました。そして、ここにもうちょっと何で好きか説明を書きたいと思います。今回は楽しい本を話しましょう！

１）ハリー･ポッター

ハリー･ポッターが大大大好きです。誰でも読んでいいと思います。とてもすばらしい本です。以上で

す。

２）パシー・ジャクソン

もし、ハリー･ポッターが好きでしたら、この本も好きと思います。そして、アメリカと西洋文化に根深いギリシャーとローマの神話を話です。そして、ボールペンから剣に変身するものもあります。かっこ良いでしょう？

３）さよなら「いい子」の魔法

映画を見て、ダメです！ダメ！ダメ！映画は。。。全然よくなかったです。でも、本は。。。本はステキです。エラーちゃんは意地悪な継母のいる家に長くいませんでした。１人で冒険に出かけて、名付けの母がかけた呪いを解こうとします。

４）魔法使いハウルと火の悪魔

やっぱりジブリの映画はとてもすばらしいですけど、本もすばらしいですよ！ハウルさんは映画よりももっと臆病者です。ソフィーさんはもっと。。。ソフィーぽいです。（笑）初めて読んだときは２００８年ごろでしたけど、もう１０回ぐらい読みました。とても面白い話です。

日本語に翻訳がない本

Dealing With Dragons. 時々、姫様のことはつまらないと思いますね。魔法や剣の使い方やラテン語や楽しい、便利なことは学べません！そうしたらどうしますか？もし、あなたが「Cimorene」の姫様でしたら、逃げ出してドラゴンのところに住みに行きます！もっと面白い生活になりますよね。

Home Visits

It's a new school year! So everyone has a new teacher and a new classroom. Are you ready to learn a lot this year?
When school starts in Japan, teacher's visit students homes to see their home life and to meet their parent(s) one on one. They find out important information and create a good relationship with their students' parents.
In America, when school starts (in September) the school will choose one or two nights in the first month that parents can come visit the school. Parents will sit in their child's seat and listen to the teacher's explanation and goals for their class. Sometimes parents even take the bus to school!
Both are really good ideas, in my opinion, but I wish both happened a bit later. Teachers are already so busy at the beginning of the school year, one more thing to do must be really stressful.

４月になりました！新しい学年もなりました。みんなは新しい担任先生と新しいクラスになりましたね。頑張りましょうね！
日本の学年は始まったときに、家庭訪問があります。担任先生は児童の両親を始めてあいますから、とても大事です。担任先生と児童と両親は一年間のいい関係をつかられます。そして、大切な情報も聞けます。
アメリカでは最初の一ヶ月に１･２日を決めて「Back to School Night」というな夜行事をします。お父さんとお母さんはこどものような学校に行たり－ときどきバスに乗っていく－こどもの机に座たりします。担任先生は一年間の予定や授業の内容などを説明します。
両方はとてもいい行事と思いますけど、一ヶ月目に・・・先生はとても忙しいですから、たくさんストレスもあるかもしれません。二ヶ月目ぐらいになって、すればいいじゃないの？

Graduation

Today is Elementary Graduation Day! Congratulations everyone!
It seems like yesterday you were small, adorable third graders. And now you're graduating! I can't believe it! The thought of not having you in school next school year is very sad.
Good luck in middle school, and high school, and your futures! Try your best and you'll accomplish great things! From wherever I am, I'll be cheering you on (and probably bragging about you as well).
Don't forget me OR YOUR ENGLISH. I won't forget you either!
Last years graduates, how are you doing? You're still doing your best at English, right? Right? Right?
Again, CONGRATULATIONS!

今日は卒業式です！
みんな、おめでとうございます！
3年生のときが四年間前のこととはちょっと…信じられません！あの時には、みんなは小さくて可愛かったですよ!!いつもステキな笑顔で勉強を頑張りました！来年度はみんながいないということが…とてもさびしいです！
中学に行っても、高校に行っても、未来へ行っても、一生懸命頑張ってください！先生はどこにいても応援しています!!!!みんなのことは忘れませんので、みんなも先生と英語の授業の思い出も忘れないでください！
そして、去年卒業した６年生たちは元気にしていますか？英語をまだ頑張っていますね！( ＾∀＾)

School's Out for . . . the Flu?

Did you know, in America we don't have days off for sickness in school? In Japan lots of schools have days called 学級閉鎖 (gakkyu-heisa), which is a temporary closing of certain classes due to the majority of the students being absent from a sickness. For example, if one class of sixth graders had more than half of its students absent because they were sick, they might suspend classes for that one class for two to three days.

I'm sure it's possible to have this kind of closing in America, but I've never heard of it. In America, it's not normal to close one school in the area and the others remain open – let alone, one class in a school close while the other students come to class.

I think 学級閉鎖 is very strange, but mostly a good idea. It helps keep sick students at home. It helps make sure the entire class is mostly on the same page of their classes. But I do think it's pretty weird to have one class in an entire school just not come. But I'm sure American schools do things that Japanese people find really weird.

ね、アメリカの学校で学級閉鎖はないことを知ってますか？

アメリカで学級閉鎖は絶対できると思いますけど、私は聞いたことがありません。アメリカでは市内に一校だけを休校にすることは難しいので、学校で一クラスだけを休校にするというのはもっと難しいことなのです。

私にとって、学級閉鎖はとても不思議な感じがしますが、とてもアイデアだと思います。病気の生徒は無理しないように家でゆっくりできます。そして、元気な生徒だけ授業が進むということがありませんから。でも、まだ一クラスだけ休むということはとても変だと思います。まぁ、多分アメリカの学校についても日本の人にとって「不思議だな！」と感じることもあると思います！

Family

I thought I'd talk about my whole family before I continue talking about everyone individually.

My family has five people.

First there was just my dad and mom. They lived in downtown Richmond for a while with their cat, Tess, and Dad's dog from college, Summer.

Then they moved to the suburbs and had me! I'm the oldest child and the oldest grandchild. So for my first two years I got used to being the center of attention. (I still can't figure out why I'm not anymore. Hmmm. Hahaha) When I was still a baby, we moved to Louisville, Kentucky.

It was here that my sister and brother were born. I don't remember anything about my sister's birth, but I remember my grandparents taking my sister and I to a family restaurant when my brother was born. (Totally relevant, right?)

Anyway, when I was five (after my awesome Little Mermaid birthday party), we moved back to Richmond, Virginia. I started kindergarten (which in America is part of elementary school) and my brother and sister went to pre-school. Soon after moving back Summer passed away. I think it was really hard for Dad to lose her.

After a few years of begging Mom, we got a new puppy, Rose-Anne. We all loved Rose-Anne, but I think she was really good companion for my brother since my sister had just started school as well. My mom has lots of pictures of them together.

We stayed in Richmond, in the same house until after I moved out and came to Japan. It was a really nice place to grow up. And 100% different from Japan.

These days my sister is working towards being a occupational therapist for children. And my brother is a river rafting guide on the James. (Riverside Outfitters!!!) My dad's retired but my mom still enjoys working so she has a part-time job.

And I live and work in Japan.

家族の１人ずつの紹介をするに、ちょっと家族の全員の紹介をしようと思います！

家族は５人います。

最初は、お父さんとお母さんしかいませんでした。リッチモンドの街でテスという猫ちゃんと「サマー」というお父さんの大学生時からのワンちゃんと一緒に住んでました。

あとに、リッチモンドの郊外に引っ越し、私が生まれました！私は長女で最初の孫ですから、最初の二年間は私は家族の世界の中心でした。（何で今もうそうじゃないの？！？！笑）私がまだ赤ちゃんとのきにケンタッキー州のルイビル市に引っ越しました。

ルイビルで妹と弟は生まれました。妹の生まれる思い出はすべてありませんけど、弟の生まれる思い出は。。。おじいちゃんとおばあちゃんはファミリーレストランに連れてくれました。（全然関係ない思い出かなぁ～笑）

それから、私は５才ときにリッチモンドへ戻りました。（でも、引っ越す前に私最高なリットル・マーメイドの誕生日パーティがあったぜ！）リッチモンドで私は小学校に入学しました。リッチモンドで幼稚園の年長は小学校に入ります。キンダガーテンという学年もいます。

それから、リッチモンドへ戻っですぐに、サマーが死にました。お父さんはすごく悲しかったと思います。

サマーの死から１ヶ月後、私たちとお父さんはお母さんにずっと新しいワンちゃんお願いしました。一年後に、やっと小さくてかわいいワンちゃんが来ました。この犬の名前は「ローズ・アン」でした。もちろん、みんなは喜んで一緒に楽しく遊びましたけど、同じところに妹は学校へ入学しました。なので、弟とローズ・アンは一番仲良くなったかもしれません。お母さんは二人が一緒にいる写真を沢山撮っています。

それから、私が日本に来るまでずっとリッチモンドに住んでいました。本当に育つはいい所だと思います。でも、日本から１８０度違う生活かもしれません。

最近はケニヤにいた妹が実家に帰って来て、障害児の作業療法士になりたいので、大学院に行くはずです。そして、猫ちゃんを飼っています。弟は実家から出て、ジェームズ川でリバー・ラフティングのガイドになりました。ワンちゃんと一緒に住んでいます。

お父さんはもう退職しました。ワンちゃんと一緒に自然を楽しんでゆっくりした生活をしています。お母さんはまだ仕事をたのしんでいます。

そして、私は？私は日本で楽しく英語を小学生に教えています！

My Dad

My dad's birthday was last week! Happy Birthday, Daddy!!

So I thought I'd tell you a little bit about my dad.

My dad is tall and has a really, really, really loud voice. I'm a lot like my dad, actually.

Dad was born in North Carolina, but moved around North Carolina and Virginia a lot. My grandmother's favorite story about my dad is when he 'sold' his little sister for a frog.

When Dad was in high school, he played American football and got his teeth knocked out – so now he has two fake teeth. He really enjoyed playing football but when he graduated he quit. In American university playing football is like a part time job (really serious).

Anyway, my dad went to Virginia Tech and majored in forestry. Dad loves camping and hiking and fishing and anything about the outdoors. I think Dad might have wanted to become a forest ranger.

But Dad met Mom and fell in love. And Mom wanted a family. So my dad found a job and worked his way up to being a manager in a big company. (Forest rangers don't make much money.)

Then I was born, and then my sister, and then my brother. And Mom and Dad were too busy trying to raise three kids to have many hobbies.

My dad is the best! (Although I think everyone thinks that about their dad.)

I miss him a lot when I'm in Japan. But it makes the times I see him more important.

先週はお父さんの誕生日でした！おめでとう、パパ！

そしたら、ちょっとお父さんの紹介を書きます！

お父さんは身長は高くて声が大きいです。多分、私とお父さんはとても似ていると思います。（笑）

お父さんはノースカロライナ州で生まれましたけど、ノースカロライナ州とバージニア州の内で何度も引っ越しをしました。おばあちゃんの一番好きな話はお父さんは小さいときにお父さんが妹をカエルで売ったそうです。

お父さんは高校時代にアメフトをしていたら、前歯を２つ打ち抜きました。なので、今は前歯に２つ差し歯がついています。アメフトを楽しんでましたが、高校を卒業しましたらやめました。アメリカの大学校でアメフトはバイトみたいです。（大学ではみんな真面目にします。）

とにかく、お父さんはバージニア工科大学に行きました。専門は自然学だったので、多分国立自然公園で働きたかったと思います。お父さんはキャンプやハイキングなどの外の活動が大好きですから。

でも、お父さんはお母さんと出会って恋に落ちました。そして、お母さんは家族が欲しかったと思います。それで、お父さんもう少しい給料の高い仕事を探しました。そして、大きな会社で働くるになり給料が上がり、やがてマネジャーになりました。

それから、私は生まれました。次に妹、弟が生まれました。そして、お父さんとお母さんは三人の子育てに忙しくなって、趣味などはもてなくなりました。

私のお父さんは最高ですよ！（でも、多分みんなも自分のお父さんがサイコーあと思ってると思うけど！）

私は今、日本に住んでいますから、あまり会いないからちょっと寂しいですね。でも、それから一緒にいるときはもっともっと大切に時間を過ごすようになりました。

School Buses

In seventh grade one of my classmates told me I was going to be president of the United States.
Why? Because I had given a speech about seatbelts and seatbelt safety.
The use of seatbelts are generally required for all passengers in a car and seatbelt safety is very important in America.
So.
Why don't American school buses use them?
I can only remember one bus that had seatbelts and no body ever used them.
I don't remember anyone walking around the school bus when it was moving or acting dangerously, but it's still very strange.
I have very fond memories of the school bus ride to and from school, but thinking back it seems that it was more dangerous than I realized.

 私は７年生（日本の中１）のときにに同級生はが「アメリカの大統領になれる！」といってくれました。
理由は私がシートベルトとシートベルトの安心性ことについての話したからです。
アメリカでは結構だれでも車に乗ったらシートベルトをしなくてはいけません。
でも。。。
なぜアメリカのスクールバスはシートベルトがないのでしょう？
一台だけシートベルトがあるのを見ました。そして、だれでも使いませんでした。
でも、バスが動いたときに立ったりふざけたりする人はあんまりいませんでした、でもちょっと可笑しいですね？
バスに乗ってる思い出はいっぱいありますけど、今考えると、とても危険かもしれません。

Snow

My hometown is Midlothian, Virginia. A small suburb of Richmond, Virginia.
It gets cold in my hometown too, but we don't often get lots of snow. Freezing rain is more common. (>_<;;)

But last week, it snowed at my parents' house! It was so pretty! My father took a picture and uploaded it.

I bet my old schools had a snow day. Snow days are the BEST! In Japan if schools unexpectedly close, students are supposed to stay home and study. In America . . . wellllll, not so much. hahaha Snow days are a day for playing, sledding, making snowmen, and having snowball fights!
I love snow days!

私の出身はバージニア州のミッドロージアン町です。バージニア州のリッチモンド市の郊外です。
ミッドロージアンもとても寒くなりますけど、雪はあんまり降りません。凍ってる雨の方が降ります。
でも、先週は実家に雪がすもりました。

とてもきれいでした！お父さんはこの写真を撮ってアップしました。

多分、私の卒業した学校は雪で休校になったと思います。雪の日はサイコーですよ！学校は雪のせいで休みます。もし、日本で天気のせいで急に休んだら、生徒は家で自分で勉強をがんばりそうですね。アメリカは。。。。そうではないです。（＾＿＾；；）（笑）
アメリカでは雪の日は遊びの日です！外で雪だるまをつくったり、そりですべったり、雪がっせんをしたりして遊びます。
雪の日は大好きです！！

Explanation

Hi again!

I thought I would explain my blog's title.

My nickname is 'Dish-chan.' When I was in high school I did a home-stay in Japan. At that time I would help my host family prepare dinner. But my host mother would ask my host sisters “Please take out two plates!” (In Japanese dish or plate is 'o-sara.') But I would just hear “Oh! Sarah!” and think, 'She's talking to me!' My host mother told my teacher and my teacher began calling me 'Dish-chan.' (The suffix ~-chan, is used for young girls or cute objects.) From that time, my friends in America also called me 'Dishy' or 'Dish-chan.'

今日はブログの名前を紹介したいです！

私のあだ名は皿です。高校時代で日本にホームステイしました。その時にホストファミリーと晩ご飯の準備を手伝いました。でも、ホストのお母さんが娘さんたちに「お皿は２枚出して！」と言いましたが、私には「お！サラ」と聞こえました。ホストのお母さんはその話を先生に教えて、先生が「Dishちゃん」で呼んで始まりました。（Dishの意味は「皿」です。）それからアメリカの友達たちもその話を好きになりましたが、「Dishy」や「Dishちゃん」と呼びました。

Hello! My name is Sarah. This is my blog that I made for my students. My students are third, fourth, fifth and sixth graders in elementary schools in Fukuoka prefecture, Japan. I want to help them learn about American culture, so I made this blog!

The English is very simple, but I hope you enjoy reading and learning about American culture through my eyes.
